We are lucky enough to be teaching sailing in some of the best sailing grounds in the world, crystal clear water makes coastal navigation simple, clear line of sight passages takes the mystique out of navigation, we do have currents and tides and teach you techniques that enable you to take advantage of them.

The BVI is blessed with fantastic sailing conditions all year round with brisk Christmas winds in December – January and steady trade-wind conditions for most of the remaining months of the year that generally only start to moderate in August and September, there is no better place in the world to learn to sail..

Our courses

Tortola Sailing School BVI offers a full range of IYT recreational courses,

Tortola Sailing School through the IYT has developed a modular format in maritime training. The concept was to offer a series of recreational nautical courses that would be acceptable to major national registries and governments. We refer to this series of courses as the “International Boating & Sailing Passport”.

This idea has enabled us to successfully establish a network of partner schools offering IYT sailing courses worldwide. The model has been enthusiastically embraced by a growing number of colleges, training establishments, countries and administrations.

The modular nature of the courses allows the candidate the convenience of full time, evening or weekend participation coupled with the ability to choose a convenient location.

Our Bareboat and Flotilla Skipper sailing Certificates are accepted by all major yacht charter companies and many insurance companies offer discounted premiums to those who hold IYT qualifications.

It is important to note that the “depth of knowledge” increases as one progresses through the various modules.

A student may enter the programme at any level determined by their previous boating experience.

What Client’s Say

Steve’s continuous positive attitude and energy added with his excellent boat and student management made my time aboard with him a truly great experience. He consistently found lively and humorous ways to teach the course material which kept me interested and enriched my training.
Ian Wright, RYA Yacht-master (200grt)
Firstly, and most importantly, Lisa and I had a most enjoyable week. That is not to say that we treated the week as a holiday! There was a serious aspect to the week and that was to learn as much as possible about sailing. We most certainly did that and felt quite competent by the end of the week.
Peter Robinson, RYA competent crew course
Living on a boat is really especial and can turn hard if is not properly understood. Well, on my week turned out to be a real pleasure  thanks to the good job done by Steve who organized the boat as it should be and got all the students involved in it .
Gabriel Tejedor, Day Skipper
Steve is a very qualified sailor, extremely experienced and very confident about sailing. Furthermore, he has the ability to transfer his knowledge to individuals as well as to a group of students in a clear and unequivocal way. In times of peace and quiet winds with a great twist of humor, and in times of F6 and more very focused on the wellbeing and safety of his crew.
Alexander Vaal, RYA Yachtmaster (200grt)
Stephen is extremely competent, and has an excellent rapport with people of all ages. His communication skills, both written and verbal, are excellent.

Due to increasing demand for our ASA and IYT sailing courses we NEED MORE BOATS

What gives us the edge on the competition

At Tortola Sailing School in the BVI we only use the highest possible grade of Instructors to deliver our courses, all Instructors are RYA commercially endorsed yacht-masters with minimum of Cruising Instructor endorsement they are also IYT and ASA registered Instructors, their abilities and professionalism is rivalled only by their enthusiasm and passion for sailing.

We own our own boats and maintain them to the highest standard, we carry all USCG required safety equipment and our instructors are all qualified first-aiders.

Our approach is above all friendly and personal, your enjoyment and development is our primary concern, we really love sailing and it shows in everything we do, don’t take our word for it, read about what people are saying about us on TRIPADVISOR

Our experience at Tortola sailing school was fantastic from the moment we landed in Tortola, we were met at the ferry terminal by one of the team and were literally in our boat within minutes of arriving. The training centre is ideally situated in a picturesque marina at Sopers Hole, West End overlooking St.John and St.Thomas.

On arrival at the centre we were shown to our sailboat which was immaculately prepared and ready to go. There was a nice breeze blowing between the main island, Tortola and Frenchmans Cay where the boat was moored. After a restful nights sleep and a great meal at Pusser’s restaurant with a couple of “pain killers”, the potent local rum drink that the BVI is famous for, we were eagerly awaiting the start of our course.

We chose to do the International bareboat skippers course coupled with the ICC exam which enabled me to qualify to charter a sailboat around many places in the world including Spain, Greece, Croatia and Turkey. Hopefully we will go further afield next year and try Croatia but the sailing was so good in the BVI I am worried Europe will not measure up!
