Learn to sail in the best cruising grounds in the Caribbean

Come and learn to sail in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean on the beautiful Island of Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI), first-class training from the friendliest sailing school in the BVI.

Based in the beautiful Soper’s Hole marina, on Frenchmans Cay, Tortola Sailing School is an ASA and IYT accredited sailing school, run by Steve and his team of passionate sailing professionals, with many years of sailing experience. All TSS instructors are qualified IYT, RYA and ASA skippers for our sailing classes and vacations.

We are lucky enough to be teaching sailing in some of the best sailing grounds in the world, crystal clear water makes coastal navigation simple, clear line of sight passages takes the mystique out of navigation, we do have currents and tides and teach you techniques that enable you to take advantage of them.

The BVI is blessed with fantastic sailing conditions all year round with brisk Christmas winds in December – January and steady trade-wind conditions for most of the remaining months of the year that generally only start to moderate in August and September, there is no better place in the world to learn to sail..

Tortola Sailing School BVI offers a full range of IYT and ASA recreational courses.

Our Bareboat and Flotilla Skipper sailing certificates are accepted by all the major yacht charter companies and many insurance companies offer discounted premiums to those who hold IYT qualifications.

Candidates will be taught either on a power or sailing vessel depending on his/her training requirements. It is important to note that the “depth of knowledge” increases as one progresses through the various modules. A student may enter the program at any level determined by their previous boating experience. Fast-Track to Bareboat and Fast-Track to Catamaran sailing courses, one to one intensive tailored training courses, skippered and bareboat charter, offshore passage-making adventures and luxury kite-surfing vacations.

We also are an ASA affiliate member school, we teach a full range of ASA courses including the popular ASA Fast-track to Bareboat skipper, the course is designed to quickly progress novices as it is very practical and will let you experience all aspects of sailing.

There is also theory involved, students will receive the course manual before the course and are advised to do some studying before the start. This way there will be more time to focus on the practical side of the syllabus.

Two weeks ago, my wife and completed a week long, live aboard sailing course with the Tortola Sailing School. I completed the IYT Interbational Bareboat Skipper and my wife the 101 course. The instruction was 1st class, deeply experienced skippers who inspired confidence, adapted to different people’s level of experience and ways of learning to ensure that all 5 of us on board developed rapidly and happily as the week went on. While quite capable of challenging us through the course and the practical tests, this was done in an environment and context that maximised potential of each student on board. The support from the shore based team in Sopers Hole was tremendous. The whole team were clearly committed to ensuring that the week went as well as it possibly could for all on board and they succeeded in this. The week was also tremendous fun, the BVI is without doubt the best place to learn to sail. Beautiful, consistent winds, warm air and water, interesting water and islands with mini adventures every day. Great party beaches and bars, equally any number of hideaways, quiet coves and Islands to relax in. The combination of the dedication of Steve and his Tortola Sailong School team to provide the best service, the experience and expertise f the instructors and the wonderful BVI made this a fabulous week. I will be bringing my son and daughter here to get them trained up to sail – and give me the opportunity to further develop my own skills. You’d be mad to train anywhere else! James D

After long period without sailing my wife and I decided to head the BVI. After some research the BVI and Tortola Sailing School were the choice. For two weeks we had the time of our lives. Starting with the support in the organization (thanks to Donna) to all the leanings from Steve and Luke, all the beautiful landscapes, sunrises and sunsets the BVI has to offer we returned to Europe very very happy we did this trip. This was the first step to our nautical lifestyle. Next step maybe buying or charting our own boat but certainly look fwd to come back to BVI and sail again with Tortola Sailing School. If you’re hesitating don’t, book it now :)

Great experience, great people and likely the best place in the BVI to get your certificate and learn how to sail. Steve and the rest of the crew were very helpful, professional and accommodating, they even fedex’ed a letter that I needed to send urgently after I was unable to do so in the USVI! They def went above and beyond. Sailing was amazing and the skipper, Luke, was truly professional and enjoyed teaching and sailing! Highly rec this place, they are worth every penny!

The other positive reviews on Trip Advisor are spot on – I returned recently from a two week ICC course at Tortola Sailing School and I have no doubt that this is hands down the best place to learn sailing. The experience was better than I could have imagined – instruction was great (Andy led the course), the itinerary took us to all the significant BVI locations, and the pace of learning was perfect to get anyone up to speed on sailing from scratch. I typically do not hand out praise freely, but TSS definitely deserves it!

I had the chance to meet several other sailors and locals on the trip. They all had very high regard for Andy and TSS given their attention to detail and passion for sailing – this is not a churn and burn operation with questionable instructors like some other places I heard existed. Steve and Donna were both very pleasant to work with when scheduling and preparing for the course.
I highly recommend this course to anyone else interested in learning sailing. Also, if you have the time, I recommend going for the two week ICC course vs the one week ASA courses. The extra week definitely added value and solidified my understanding of the sport.

Trip of a lifetime with Steve at Tortola Sailing School. Went with friends and none of us had sailing experience. Steve has tons of patience and helps with the confidence of newbies. The balance of fun, snorkeling, diving, and sailing was perfect. The yacht was clean and very comfortable! BVI is the most beautiful place I have ever been! Steve made sure to take us to many islands and had knowledge of the best places to go. Can’t wait to take another class with Steve to get more knowledge of sailing under my belt. Now that I know the basics I am ready for the next level as I passed the 101/103. If you are thinking of getting started in sailing go with Steve at the Tortola Sailing School for the education and fun of a lifetime!!!

Wow! One of the greatest experiences I’ve had, ever. Steve was a very gracious host and a remarkable teacher. He is very knowledgeable and he makes the art of sailing easy to learn. The locations we sailed were magnificent and the yacht was very clean and inviting. I plan on taking another class with Steve in the near future. Thank you Steve!

Booked this trip in July of 2014 and just completed the trip from Nov 27 -Dec 4 -2014
I looked forward to this Vacation for several months from the time I booked it and made it down to Sail with Steve with Three other friends, I was the one most interested in the certification when we book it but convinced everyone else to do the same. WOW!! Steve really Knows his business and makes sailing and learning a lot of fun, we had lots of time to do the fun stuff while we sailed from harbor to harbor diving, snorkeling, swimming etc.. We all had never sailed before but he made the trip! and we all passed are certification. If a active fun vacation is your dream go live it with Steve and the staff at Tortola Sailing School. We lived on board the Boat for 6 days and 6 nights and really in joyed every minute. Already planning the next trip down to get the next level of cert.for the rest of the crew, and my self. I do recommend that you read the ASA books 101,103 before you arrive if taking the course it will make the week much more fun. Learning on a monohull boat is the way to go after taking the course on the 51′ boat we went to review a Catamaran and can’t see how some one could teach you to sail on that setup? you really need to larger cockpit and dual helm stations to get more people involved in the learning experience! Don’t miss your chance to go learn from a Guy who really loves to Sail and loves what he is doing it shows in everything he does on board and in advance of your arrival to The BVI it was like sailing in a post card everyday. So if your thinking about trying this stop thinking book a trip the memories will last a life time!!!

Great team led by Steve, the patient and very experienced Yachtsmaster Instructor. We went for 11 days, I did my International Skipper practical and theory, my VHF exam, my wife and two kids did their crew course at the same time. We all had to work and study to pass but we still managed to have plenty of vacation time in fantastic cruising grounds. If you are looking for a sailing school in the Caribbean, this has got to be the best one. I did a lot of research before choosing this school and was delighted when finding it to be even better than expected. Well done Steve, you run a tight ship, if you excuse the pun, and I look forward to returning very soon to do my Coastal Skipper!!!. Matt
