Learn to sail in the best cruising grounds in the Caribbean

Come and learn to sail in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean on the beautiful Island of Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI), first-class training from the friendliest sailing school in the BVI.

Based in the beautiful Soper’s Hole marina, on Frenchmans Cay, Tortola Sailing School is an ASA and IYT accredited sailing school, run by Steve and his team of passionate sailing professionals, with many years of sailing experience. All TSS instructors are qualified IYT, RYA and ASA skippers for our sailing classes and vacations.

We are lucky enough to be teaching sailing in some of the best sailing grounds in the world, crystal clear water makes coastal navigation simple, clear line of sight passages takes the mystique out of navigation, we do have currents and tides and teach you techniques that enable you to take advantage of them.

The BVI is blessed with fantastic sailing conditions all year round with brisk Christmas winds in December – January and steady trade-wind conditions for most of the remaining months of the year that generally only start to moderate in August and September, there is no better place in the world to learn to sail..

Tortola Sailing School BVI offers a full range of IYT and ASA recreational courses.

Our Bareboat and Flotilla Skipper sailing certificates are accepted by all the major yacht charter companies and many insurance companies offer discounted premiums to those who hold IYT qualifications.

Candidates will be taught either on a power or sailing vessel depending on his/her training requirements. It is important to note that the “depth of knowledge” increases as one progresses through the various modules. A student may enter the program at any level determined by their previous boating experience. Fast-Track to Bareboat and Fast-Track to Catamaran sailing courses, one to one intensive tailored training courses, skippered and bareboat charter, offshore passage-making adventures and luxury kite-surfing vacations.

We also are an ASA affiliate member school, we teach a full range of ASA courses including the popular ASA Fast-track to Bareboat skipper, the course is designed to quickly progress novices as it is very practical and will let you experience all aspects of sailing.

There is also theory involved, students will receive the course manual before the course and are advised to do some studying before the start. This way there will be more time to focus on the practical side of the syllabus.

My wife and I just completed the ASA103 cruising course and had an incredible experience. The boat was clean and well maintained. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our instructor Richie was very knowledgeable, experienced and well spoken. He had plenty of patience and really made sure that we understood the course objectives. Our expectations were high going into this and we were not disappointed. Additionally we had a great tour of many island hot spots. The scenery was fantastic. Swimming and snorkeling in the beautiful Caribbean Sea. It doesn’t get any better than that!

The BVI’s are known for ideal sailing conditions and that’s exactly what we got during our two week IYT Bareboat Skipper Sailing School. Our instructor, Jamie Oliver is one of the best Skippers I’ve met in my sailing experience. He is extremely professional, doesn’t take any shortcuts, and is just an awesome dude. James and his team at the Tortola Sailing School are great people, very generous and will go out of their way to make sure you have the best experience possible. I can’t wait to go back and visit.

Whether it is attending the Sailing School or you have interest in chartering a boat/skipper for a few days for enjoyment, you will get an unforgettable experience.

I just attended the 2 week IYT bareboat skipper course. I highly recommend this course to anyone serious about learning how to sail. The Tortola Sailing School’s instructors are very knowledgeable and friendly. my instructor was Jamie Oliver and his training was 2nd to none. I highly recommend Jamie. I expected to learn some basics sailing skills but I came away with far more then what I expected. Prepare to learn team building skills, life skills, and obtain a solid foundation and understanding of sailing that is a requirement for anyone wishing to incorporate sailing into their lives. Thank you James and Jamie and everyone involved with the Tortola Sailing School for a truly wonderful and life changing experience.

I just completed a ASA 101, 103, & 104. The crew at Tortola sailing school made this a wonderful experience. I had 2 instructors throughout the course. First was Skipper Hylton Balouza who was accompanied by Hostess Emily Courtenay ( best sauce chef ever). Hylton was an amazing instructor with lots of patience☺️.
I finished the coarse with Skipper Jaime Oliver! The exams were completed and I honed in on my practical skills that I was taught.

This was an amazing experience for me! I saw Dolpins swim on the bow, tons of sea turtles and beautiful fish. I highly recommend this school.

Had great fun on our day sail with Hylton and Emily! We were staying on Tortola but wanted to explore some of the BVI destinations that aren’t accessible by ferry. A private day sail was the perfect way. After some discussion about possible destinations we went to The Indians and The Caves for snorkeling then over to Willy T. Hylton and Emily were great company and hosts. We picked up some burgers and sausages before setting sail and returned from snorkeling The Caves to a wonderful lunch spread grilled off the back of the boat. Thanks for a great day!
